Man, 26, charged in killing of homeless man who tried to stop a fight
Kansas City, Kansas – Jackson County prosecutors today charged Ricardo D. Ross, 26, with murder for allegedly pistol-whipping and shooting a homeless man who tried to break up a fight.
Ross is accused of killing Derrick L. Ashby, 19, who had been sleeping on a sidewalk near a homeless shelter at 9th and Harrison streets about 5 a.m. Wednesday.
According to court records, Ross drove up in a van and fought another man who had been riding in the van. Ashby reportedly tried to stop the fight, and Ross started fighting him. The other man ran. Ross allegedly found a magazine clip in his van, loaded his gun and shot Ashby five times.
Ross couldn’t find the key to his van, so he ran, leaving the van near Ashby’s body. Ross told police he had driven to the area to buy drugs, according to court records. More on KansasCity.com
