Party fight takes a young man’s life
Camden, New Jersey – On Sunday night, 18-year-old Sergio Rivera did something that family and friends said the hard worker rarely did — attend a party outside of his home city, Camden.
“We just wanted to enjoy ourselves, dance with some girls and relax for once in a lifetime,” said Rivera’s close friend, Jerome Corbet, 20.
But, Corbet and Rivera’s family members said the enjoyment ended with a small bump that started the fight that ultimately led to their loved one’s death in Lawnside.
Rivera was shot multiple times around 10:40 p.m. on Sunday and died outside of the Wayne Bryant Community Center on East Charleston Avenue, according to the Camden County Prosecutor’s office. The shooter remains at large.
“During the brawl, one of the people fighting Rivera drew a gun and fired it into the floor. That person left and Rivera followed him out. The gunman allegedly shot Rivera outside,” Camden County Prosecutor spokesman Jason Laughlin said in a released statement.
Rivera’s family and friends said they were “really hurt” by the situation and upset that Lawnside officials were not on site, providing security during the event, which about 150 people attended. More on Courier Post
