GRAND CHUTE, Wisconsin – An Appleton police officer in the area of 909 East Edgewood Drive arrived just minutes after a 911 call came in of a possible shooting at around 10:45 Friday morning.

“When the officer arrived he encountered an armed gunman in the driveway and also noted two victims down in the driveway.” said Sargent Pat DeWall of the Appleton Police.

Dewall says the suspect, 38-year-old Scott Schmidt, threw down his handgun when he saw the officer and was taken into custody without incident.

Grand Chute police are handling the investigation and the interim chief says one of the victims, Schmidt’s estranged wife 39-year-old Kelly Schmidt was shot in the head, and died at the hospital.

The other person shot was Scott Schmidt’s mother-in-law 56-year-old Barbara Wing. She was shot in the chest and released from the hospital. Police believe this is a domestic incident, but there are still a lot of unanswered questions.

Greg Peterson, Grand Chute’s interim police chief said “We don’t know what time he arrived here. We did discover his car and it was parked about a half mile from here but we have no idea what time he parked that vehicle, nor do we know where was was waiting or how long he was waiting before the incident actually took place.” More on Fox11 online
