3 dead, 2 hurt in Georgia shooting

ATHENS, Ga. – A University of Georgia professor who police suspect in the fatal shootings of his ex-wife and two men outside a theater near campus Saturday disappeared in his Jeep after dropping his children off with a neighbor, authorities said.

A nationwide manhunt was on for 57-year-old George Zinkhan, whom neighbors and others described as a quiet, introverted and respected marketing professor at the university in Athens.

Members of a local theater group had gathered midday at the Athens Community Theater when Zinkhan left his children in his car and fired at them, said Athens-Clarke County Police Capt. Clarence Holeman. Killed were Zinkhan’s ex-wife Marie Bruce, 47, Tom Tanner, 40, and Ben Teague, 63, Holeman said. Two others were injured by flying shrapnel. More on Yahoo! News

Woman arrested in shooting death of husband

PURVIS, Mississippi – A 51-year-old Lamar County woman has been arrested in connection to the death of her husband.County Deputy Coroner Philip Carlan says 44-year-old James Daniel Kendrick suffered “massive internal injuries due to gunshot wounds” resulting in his death Saturday.

Carlan said Kendrick’s body was transported to Jackson for an autopsy.

Deputies say Kendrick’s wife, Beverly Kaye Kendrick, was arrested and charged with murder. More on WXVT.com

Father killed by 22-year-old son

Portland, Maine – Ross Morrill, 22, was arrested by detectives and charged with murder on Saturday afternoon.

Morrill’s father, 55-year-old Robert Morrill, was shot in front of his home on Hopper Road at about 3 p.m. He died shortly after arriving at Goodall Hospital in Sanford.

The younger Morrill was taken to the state police barracks in Alfred for questioning following the shooting and was charged there before being transported to the York County Jail. He is expected to make his first court appearance on Tuesday.

The shooting was reported by the victim’s wife and mother of the accused, Vickie Morrill.

Police recovered a hunting rifle they believe was used in the shooting. More on WMTW.com

Police say shooting death of 19-year-old was accidental

Tampa, Florida – A 19-year-old who was accidentally shot in the face after a friend said the teen had been playing with a handgun has died, police said today.

John Taylor Weber was taken to Tampa General Hospital on Friday in critical condition. He died about 4 this morning, Tampa police said.

Weber was a senior at Tampa Preparatory School.

Officers responded to 5613 S. Bayshore Blvd. about 4:08 p.m. after a 911 caller advised his friend was playing with a handgun and had shot himself.

Police found Weber and 22-year-old Zachary Daniel Kiely, who lives at the house, in the living room. Investigators recovered a handgun. More on Tampa Bay online

Man shot to death over argument by a passing motorist

Erie, Pennsylvania – A man was shot and killed on Erie’s east side Saturday night when he stepped away from a backyard cookout and argued with a passing motorist.

Erie police were called to East 20th Street at about 8:10 p.m. Officers at the scene said the man was unconscious when they got there.

Police arrested the suspected gunman at the scene. Foulk said the shooting was the result of “a road rage thing. A traffic dispute.”

Witnesses said the gunman got out of his car when the other man shouted something to him as the gunman passed the backyard of the white house at 2003 Franklin Ave. Several people, including a number of young children, were in the yard having a party, said one witness, who did not want to give his name. 21-year-old man shot dead during argument at a memorial event

Dayton, Ohio – One person is dead after a shooting in West Dayton. It happened around 7 p.m. Saturday at an event in memory of the victim of a different fatal shooting.

When the fight broke out, there was one shot fired and a 21-year-old victim was shot in the abdomen. The victim was pronounced dead at Miami Valley Hospital around 7:45 p.m.

Johns said the shooting happened as more than 100 people were having a cookout in memory of the victim of another fatal shooting. More on WHIOtv.com

2 Florida sheriff’s deputies fatally shot

CRESTVIEW, Fla. – Two north Florida sheriff’s deputies were fatally shot at a shooting range by a suspect who was later killed in an exchange of gunfire with deputies after he fled across the county line, authorities said.

The incident began shortly after 10 a.m. when the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center notified the sheriff’s office that Cartwright’s wife said she had been beaten by her husband, according to a timeline released by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the sheriff’s office.

The two deputies found Cartwright at the shooting range and began trying to arrest him shortly before 1 p.m., but they reported that he was refusing to cooperate with their attempts to handcuff him.

At 12:51 p.m. dispatchers received a call that an officer had been hit and began their search for Cartwright, who had left the shooting range in his truck.

Deputies shot and killed Cartwright around 1:10 p.m.

Cartwright had been arrested in November on a charge of domestic battery against his wife, Elizabeth Marie Cartwright, 21, and that the charge was still pending. More on Yahoo! news

81-year-old man shot dead his neighbor over dispute

SHADY HILLS, Florida – A dispute between neighbors this afternoon has left a 29-year-old man dead and an 81-year-old man a suspect.

The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office says John Croft, 17654 Connie Court, shot neighbor Seth A. Sigmon, 17642 Connie Court, multiple times.

Croft has been arrested on manslaughter charges, according to sheriff’s spokesman Kevin Doll.

Croft has been taken to the Land O’ Lakes Detention Center and should be booked in the next few hours, Doll said. More on Tampa Bay Online

Jersey City man shot to death outside housing complex

Jersey City, New Jersey – A 23-year-old man was fatally shot in the face outside a public housing complex in Jersey City early this morning, authorities said.

Jalil Spears of Jersey City was killed shortly after 1 a.m. outside a building at the Booker T. Washington Public Housing Complex by what police believe was a lone gunman on foot, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.

Spears had been found not guilty during a murder trial last year, in which he was accused of killing a drug dealer, but authorities said they have not established a motive in his shooting death today.

At least six shots were fired from a semi-automatic pistol, some hitting cars parked nearby, and neighbors who heard them called police, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office. Responding officers found Spears outside a building. More on NJ.com
