Jersey City man shot to death outside housing complex

Jersey City, New Jersey – A 23-year-old man was fatally shot in the face outside a public housing complex in Jersey City early this morning, authorities said.

Jalil Spears of Jersey City was killed shortly after 1 a.m. outside a building at the Booker T. Washington Public Housing Complex by what police believe was a lone gunman on foot, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.

Spears had been found not guilty during a murder trial last year, in which he was accused of killing a drug dealer, but authorities said they have not established a motive in his shooting death today.

At least six shots were fired from a semi-automatic pistol, some hitting cars parked nearby, and neighbors who heard them called police, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office. Responding officers found Spears outside a building. More on NJ.com
