Hunter shot to death on the opening of hunting season

Walkersville, West Virgina – Investigators with the DNR continue their efforts to find the person responsible for the death of a turkey hunter in Lewis County on the opening day of spring gobbler season.  Thirty-two year old Shawn Stewart of Walkersville was killed on opening day Monday. His body was discovered a day later after authorities launched a wide-scale search. DNR Lt. Jim Vance in Elkins tells MetroNews Stewart was killed by a shotgun blast that struck his face.  Vance says that information leads them to believe the shooter probably knew they had shot somebody.

“I think he followed all the safety rules,” said Vance about Stewart’s position. “Back up against the tree, out in the open.  He was set up to call a turkey and he was what I always like to call ‘defensive hunting’.” More on West Virgina MetroNews

O’FALLON, IL — Police were called to what they thought was an apartment burglary Monday night but once inside, they were confronted by a man who refused to put down his rifle and by the body of his estranged wife.

An officer shot three times at James Jenkins, 44, of East St. Louis, hitting him once and killing him, Illinois State Police Lt. Jim Morrisey said during a press conference Tuesday afternoon. His estranged wife, Adrinne Jenkins, 40, was shot twice in the chest and was already dead about 9:15 p.m. Monday when officers entered apartment B at the Chevy Chase Apartments, 207 Estate Drive.

James Jenkins called police from his cell phone at about 9:05 p.m., reported a burglary and officers spent time in the neighborhood looking for the suspects Jenkins described.

Two O’Fallon Police officers knocked on Adrinne Jenkins’ apartment door while a supervisor remained outside. The officers opened the unlocked door, walked in and saw Adrinne Jenkins lying on the floor and immediately called for an ambulance.

They then saw James Jenkins, who held a rifle pointed at them, and they ordered him several times to put down the gun. He refused and one officer shot him. Jenkins did not fire the rifle. The officer’s bullet hit him in the left arm and the bullet passed into his chest. More on bnd.com

Man killed himself on second trip to gun range

Posted on April 27, 2009. Filed under: Florida, suicide |

CASSELBERRY, FLorida – Jason Kevin McCarthy, 26, was at Shoot Straight on U.S. Highway 17-92 about 11 a.m. Monday and asked about renting a gun, Casselberry police Officer Joseph Nas said in a report that has just been released. McCarthy was handed paperwork to fill out, “but he stated he had something to do first and left the store,” Nas wrote.

He came back about 5:40 p.m. and that time he filled out the paperwork and rented a 9mm handgun.

No one saw McCarthy shoot himself, but the suicide was verified by a surveillance video, police said. Employee Adam Schulman told police he instructed McCarthy on how to safely use the gun and watched him shoot at his target on a monitor for about five minutes before turning to wait on a customer.

He said he realized something was wrong when another customer pounded on the glass and told him McCarthy had shot himself.  More on Orlando Sentinel
