San Jose, CA – “Don’t kill him! He’s mentally ill!” That’s what Brian Duy Pham, 29, shouted as police officers rushed into his Berryessa neighborhood home just about noon Sunday, according to family members.

His brother, Daniel, had just attacked him with a knife.

27-year-old had allegedly moved toward police with a knife. Two officers first used a Taser to try to subdue him, then shot him with their handguns. He died at the scene.

Police Monday identified the officers as Matthew Blackerby, with two years on the force, and Brian Jeffrey, a three-year officer. Both are on routine administrative leave. The case is expected to be presented to a grand jury to determine if the officers have any criminal liability. More on Mercury News

9-year-old girl shot to death in York

Posted on May 10, 2009. Filed under: bystander, Pennsylvania |

York, PA – A 9-year-old girl was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting Sunday afternoon.Ciara Savage, of Lancaster, was in the 500 block of South Duke Street when she was shot in the back about 2:35 p.m., York County Coroner Barry Bloss said.

Darren Moore, who lives further north on the block, said he worries about his own daughter. Kids can’t be kept inside all the time, he said. But he said he frequently hears gunshots outside at night. They echo, and he said it’s hard to know where they came from, much less the reasons behind them.

“That’s pretty much commonplace,” Moore said. “A couple of times a week.”

Witnesses told police the shooter was in a red or burgundy vehicle, and an abandoned vehicle matching that description was found nearby, city police Lt. Tim Utley said. He could provide no further details about the vehicle. More on York Daily Record

MARSING, Idaho – a 14-year-old girl found a .25-caliber semiautomatic pistol in a closet of a residence she was visiting around 2 p.m. Sunday. She brought the pistol into the living room where the boy, Marcos Jaramillo, and a friend were watching television and accidentally fired one round while handling the firearm, officials said.

The shooting occurred inside the home of the 14-year-old’s sister, a 17-year-old mother of a 2-year-old who lives at the home with her boyfriend, according to Owyhee County Sheriff Daryl Crandall. The gun belonged to the 17-year-old’s boyfriend, who was not present when it was fired.

The eldest sister was home at the time of the shooting

The bullet struck Marcos on the right side of the head and exited the left side. He was transported to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise by air ambulance. He was in critical condition on Monday and died just before midnight.

Gun locks are available free of charge in Owyhee County at the sheriff’s office in Murphy and at the sheriff’s substations in Marsing and Grandview.

“We’re trying to promote as much safety as we can with the (free) gun locks,” Crandall said. More on Idaho Press
