MESA, Ariz. — Two people were killed and six others — two of them children — were wounded in a shooting at a high school graduation party, police said Sunday.

A 37-year-old man was taken into custody after a four-hour standoff with police at a house in Mesa, east of Phoenix, Mesa Police Sgt. Ed Wessing said.

Preliminary information indicated that the suspect was an invited guest at the party who got into a physical fight with his ex-wife late Saturday, Wessing said.

The suspect allegedly went to his vehicle, got a gun, returned to the party and opened fire, killing his 38-year-old ex-wife and a 32-year-old man, Wessing said.

Inglewood police shoot, kill man at birthday party

Posted on May 18, 2009. Filed under: California, shot by police |

Inglewood, CA – Inglewood police shot and killed a man who allegedly brandished a weapon early Sunday while officers were attempting to break up a birthday party, authorities said.

Police said officers responded to reports of a fight shortly after 12:45 a.m. in the 800 block of South Osage Avenue. Officers opened fire on Marcus Smith, 31, of Compton after he pointed a semiautomatic handgun at them, Lt. Mike McBride said.”

He had it in his hand. He drew it and pointed it in the direction of the officers,” McBride said. “So I would say that’s threatening the officers.”

One officer was shot in the right leg in the incident. He was taken to a hospital, treated and released, McBride said. Police suspect the officer was shot by Smith, but they need to conduct more tests on his gun to be sure, he said.

A woman who identified herself as Smith’s fiancee said she did not see him brandish a weapon. Kalonna LaCount said she and Smith were leaving the party together after police called on guests to disperse. LaCount said she and Smith were walking down a stairway when Smith slipped. LaCount said she then saw Smith’s body jerk as police fired their weapons.
“He had his hands in the air,” she said. “The more he stumbled, the more they shot.”

The Inglewood Police Department is under investigation by the Justice Department and the Los Angeles County Office of Independent Review over incidents in which officers have been accused of using excessive force. More on LA Times

MARSING, Idaho – a 14-year-old girl found a .25-caliber semiautomatic pistol in a closet of a residence she was visiting around 2 p.m. Sunday. She brought the pistol into the living room where the boy, Marcos Jaramillo, and a friend were watching television and accidentally fired one round while handling the firearm, officials said.

The shooting occurred inside the home of the 14-year-old’s sister, a 17-year-old mother of a 2-year-old who lives at the home with her boyfriend, according to Owyhee County Sheriff Daryl Crandall. The gun belonged to the 17-year-old’s boyfriend, who was not present when it was fired.

The eldest sister was home at the time of the shooting

The bullet struck Marcos on the right side of the head and exited the left side. He was transported to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise by air ambulance. He was in critical condition on Monday and died just before midnight.

Gun locks are available free of charge in Owyhee County at the sheriff’s office in Murphy and at the sheriff’s substations in Marsing and Grandview.

“We’re trying to promote as much safety as we can with the (free) gun locks,” Crandall said. More on Idaho Press
