Man killed over suspicion of stealing money

Montgomery, Alabama – Samuel Washington Jr., 51, of 3435 Doris Circle was charged with murder in the death of Jerome Herman Adams, 45, of Hope Hull.

Both men have extensive criminal histories, and illegal narcotics were found on the ground next to the victim when officers arrived, Maj. Huey Thornton, police spokesman, said.

Washington’s criminal record includes theft- and drug-related offenses, and Adams also has faced drug charges in the past, court records show.

The killing apparently stemmed from a dispute between the two involving $200 Washington suspected Adams of stealing from his garage, Thornton said.

Officers found Adams about 5:51 p.m. Thursday lying in front of a residence in the 3400 block of Doris Circle. He was bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head. More on Montgomery Advertiser

Man shot and killed a local policeman, critically wounded another

Posted on April 24, 2009. Filed under: Alabama, shot by police |

GRANBERRY CROSSROADS, Alabama – A Henry County man weilding a gun threatened a neighbor woman; shot and killed a local policeman; shot and critically injured a Henry County deputy; and held authorities at bay before being killed in a shootout with police.

Friday’s tragic events began about 2 in the afternoon when a neighbor woman seeking better cell phone service near the store. As she sat in her truck, Davis came up from behind, armed with a shotgun. He fired a round in the air and reloaded before he reached into her truck and removed some papers. The woman, law enforcement said, became more frightened after Davis told her to gather her family close.

Smothers said his wife telephoned him at work and when he got home about two hours later, the two of them drove up to the store, called law enforcement and waited.

Henry County Sheriff’s Deputy Ted Yost was first to arrive, with Reserve Officer Mickey Gillis.

“When he got there, he pulled in the front yard and got out to knock on the door,” Maddox said. “The man came around and ambushed him and shot three or four times with a shotgun. It looks like he hit him more than once in the shoulder, head and face area.”

Gillis, who lacked the training of a certified police officer, picked up the radio and sent out the ominous message: “Officer down.”

Law enforcement agencies from throughout the area responded as Yost lay bleeding and Gillis was penned down behind the deputy’s car. More on Dothan Eagle

Alabama man kills wife, 3 others and self

Green Hill, Alabama – A man facing a divorce trial shot and killed his estranged wife, their teenage daughter and two other relatives in rural north Alabama before returning to his home in a nearby town and killing himself, authorities said Tuesday.

Kevin Garner’s body was found Tuesday afternoon near his Priceville home, which burned to the ground overnight. His divorce trial was to start Wednesday. Garner apparently shot himself in the chest, said Travis Clemmons, chief investigator for the sheriff’s office in Lauderdale County, where the four bodies were found earlier in the day in a home in Green Hill, a small community near the Tennessee line.

The victims were identified as Garner’s estranged wife, Tammy, 40; their 16-year-old daughter, Chelsie; Garner’s sister, Karen Beaty of Illinois; and Beaty’s 11-year-old son, whose name was not released.

Investigators said the four were shot, apparently with a handgun, around midnight Monday. They did not know if Kevin Garner was licensed to carry a firearm.

It was one of eight mass shootings around the country — and the third in Alabama — in the last month that have left grief-stricken communities in shock.

Clemmons said a neighbor visiting the Green Hill house Tuesday morning saw a body through the door and called authorities.

Court officials said the Garners were in court Monday in advance of the trial and nothing seemed unusual.

“I just can’t understand it,” said Clemmons, “and with a 16-year-old and an 11-year-old kid, there’s nothing rational about it.”

In the divorce file, Tammy Garner sought custody of their daughter and alleged that her husband “has been both physically and emotionally abusive.” Kevin Garner accused her of adultery and of taking $38,000 out of their joint bank account when they separated May 27.
