TACOMA, Washington — Pierce County prosecutors allege that a man spent several hours robbing people of drugs and money in downtown Tacoma before he shot a woman in the head after she wouldn’t turn over $50.
Ben Aaron Strickland, 32, was charged Monday with one count of first-degree murder in the April 7 death of 51-year-old Carmen Jackson. A plea of not guilty was entered for Strickland at his arraignment, and Pierce County Superior Court Judge Linda Lee set bail at $1 million.
Court documents allege Strickland spent several hours in the downtown neighborhood robbing people of small amounts of money and drugs. Prosecutors say Jackson was shot when she refused to turn over her money. Police found a $50 bill in her pocket.
Strickland was arrested Friday. Court records say he contends his gun went off accidentally. More on Seattle Times
5 children, father die in murder-suicide
GRAHAM, Wash. – A father apparently shot to death five of his children, ages 7 to 16, at their mobile home and then killed himself near a casino miles away, police said Saturday.
Ed Troyer, a spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff, called it a domestic violence situation and a murder-suicide.
“We believe they all died of gunshot wounds,” Troyer said.
Police early Saturday found the father slain from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was in his car, parked near the Muckleshoot Casino in Auburn, about 30 miles south of Seattle. Later in the day, Pierce County deputies checked the mobile home, which is about 20 miles southeast of the casino, and found four of the children dead in their beds and the fifth in the bathroom.

Seattle, Washington – On Sept. 21, 2006, Jordan Tautua-Jantoc shot and killed Michael Miller while handling a pistol at the family’s South Seattle home. In the years that followed, Tautua-Jantoc and his family wrestled with the legal implications of the shooting; Tautua-Jantoc ultimately pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to home detention.
At the time of his death, Michael Miller was living with his father, Tim Miller, and Lena Jantoc, his stepmother and Tautua-Jantoc’s mother. All three are named as defendants in the suit filed last month in King County Superior Court by Michael Miller’s mother, Michele Lucero. More on SeattlePi.com
