San Jose man killed by police was mentally ill, father says

San Jose, CA – “Don’t kill him! He’s mentally ill!” That’s what Brian Duy Pham, 29, shouted as police officers rushed into his Berryessa neighborhood home just about noon Sunday, according to family members.

His brother, Daniel, had just attacked him with a knife.

27-year-old had allegedly moved toward police with a knife. Two officers first used a Taser to try to subdue him, then shot him with their handguns. He died at the scene.

Police Monday identified the officers as Matthew Blackerby, with two years on the force, and Brian Jeffrey, a three-year officer. Both are on routine administrative leave. The case is expected to be presented to a grand jury to determine if the officers have any criminal liability. More on Mercury News

12-year-old Boy Dies After Accidentally Firing Gun

A 12-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed himself Sunday in the western Oregon town of Hammond, police said.

Warrenton police said a bullet from a .22-caliber pistol struck and killed Austin Matschiner. The gun used in the shooting belongs to his family. The sixth grader died in his room Sunday morning, medical examiners said.

Police said Matschiner was an avid hunter and was at home with his mom when the gun went off. More on KPTV.com

Man killed by police was carrying BB gun

Oakley, California – A 37-year-old suicidal man shot and killed by Oakley police officers Saturday night was carrying a BB gun that looked like a real Smith & Wesson handgun during the standoff, according to investigators.

The shooting happened about 7:50 p.m. when Oakley officers found Alan Openshaw near Lois and Mallard lanes after he had mentioned suicide and made threats toward police to dispatchers. He later led them on a pursuit that ended in the 900 block of Almond Drive when he exited the vehicle, put the gun to his head, and continued making threats to kill himself and harm police.

Officers used a 40 mm weapon firing high-velocity sponges in an attempt to disarm him, according to the sheriff’s office, which contracts to provide police services to the city. Openshaw then pointed the gun at police, and several officers discharged their firearms and shot him. More on Mercury News

Man turns in self in shooting death investigation

PORT LAVACA, Texas – One of the men possibly involved in Wednesday’s shooting death of Joseph Martinez turned himself in Friday.

The man was not arrested, but was interviewed, said Port Lavaca Police Chief John Stewart.

Martinez, 26, of Houston, was shot in the neck about 10:33 p.m. Wednesday at the top of a staircase of a Port Lavaca apartment at 404 Holiday Lane. He was transported to the Memorial Medical Center, and pronounced dead at 12:20 a.m. He suffered heavy bleeding in his neck.

Detroit police seek suspects in shooting death of man, 78

Detroit — Police are searching for suspects in the death of a 78-year-old man who was shot Wednesday while driving on the city’s west side.

About 3:30 p.m., the man was in a car near Fenkell and Linwood when a white van pulled up alongside him and shot at the driver’s side, said Sgt. Eren Stephens Bell of the Detroit Police Department.

The man, whose name has not been released, was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

It was unknown how many people were in the van at the time of the shooting, Stephens Bell said. More on Detroit News

Argument over girl led to shooting death of 16-year-old

BELLEVILLE, Ill. — Authorities say two 18-year-olds have been charged in the drive-by shooting of a 16-year-old Cahokia boy.

DeShawn Bell of Centreville and Travon Watson of Cahokia were each charged Friday with first-degree murder in the death of Kenneth Allen.

O’Fallon Police Capt. Eric VanHook says an argument over a girl may have led to the shooting on Tuesday night.

It’s not clear if the teens have attorneys, and neither has a listed telephone number in Centreville or Cahokia. They’re being held in the St. Clair County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail. More on WQAD.com

Father arraigned in son’s shooting death

GALLUP, New Mexico  – A 46-year-old man has been arraigned on an open count of murder in the shooting death of his adult son at a mobile home north of Gallup.

Mark Krueger pleaded not guilty Wednesday and Magistrate Henrietta Soland set his bond at $100,000 cash.

Krueger is being held at the Gallup-McKinley Adult Detention Center.

Investigators say Krueger and his son, Solomon Krueger, were arguing yesterday when the elder Krueger allegedly fired one shot from a pistol, striking his son in the head. The son died this morning at a hospital in Gallup. More on KOB.com

Berkeley police investigate shooting death

An 18-year-old man was found shot Monday night in the backyard of a home in the 1300 block of 67th Street.

Police said they responded to numerous 911 calls of shots fired in the area at 11:29 p.m. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.

11-year-old arrested in father’s shooting death

KALISPELL, Mont. –  Kalispell police say an 11-year-old boy has been arrested in the shooting death of his father.

Officials say Patrick Gretsch was shot in the chest with a 20-gauge shotgun at his residence at about 6 p.m. Monday.

Police Chief Roger Nasset says an investigation revealed that a domestic disturbance was occurring between Gretsch and another adult and the boy fired two rounds from a 20-gauge shotgun, one into the ceiling and the second at his father.  More on KXMC.com

Gun slay of homeless teen marks deadly night in city

A Harlem teen trying to turn his life around was gunned down during a street fight, one of three murders across the city before the sun rose Sunday, police said.

Cory Squire, 17, was tossed out of his Harlem home by his fed-up mother last year but was looking for work and had been pleading for her forgiveness, his friends said.

“He called and said, ‘Mom, I have nowhere to go [and] I don’t have any food,'” said Jennifer Moore, one of several friends who provided shelter for Cory in recent months. “He was on the streets fending for himself,” said Moore.

Those same streets were Cory’s undoing at 5:30 a.m. when he tangled with a group of men on W. 141st St., police said.

The encounter soon grew heated, and one of the men drew a handgun and shot Cory in the chest. The teenager died instantly.  More on NY Daily News

Teen Fatally Shot at Party

Las Vegas, NV – Metro Police are looking for suspects in the shooting death of a teenage boy at a weekend party.

It happened around 1:30 Sunday morning at the Safari Apartments near Nellis and Sahara. Police say three suspects arrived at the party and showed a gun, causing several people to flee on foot. The victim, 14-year-old Jared Flemming, was shot multiple times in the back as he was running away.

Dispute Over Dogs Leads To Shooting Death South Of Tampico

Tampico, IN –  A family fight over dogs led to the shooting death of a rural Tampico man Saturday and the arrest of his son for his murder, according to Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.

Receiving three reports of an injured man at 11 p.m., Jackson County Sheriff’s Department officers went to the home of John Shoultz, 48, at 7865 S. State Road 39 south of Tampico and found him dead from gunshot wounds.

A short time later, his son, John A. Shoultz III, 20, was stopped by Jennings County police as he and his girlfriend, Andrea D. Howard, 19, of Crothersville, were driving east on U.S. 50 in North Vernon.

He and his Dad were arguing over dogs in the house,” Lahrman said of the suspect and incident that led to the shooting. Lahrman said the older Shoultz was shot at least three times by a large caliber handgun. More on Crothersville Times

16 Year-Old Charged In Bartlett 12 Year-Old’s Shooting Death

BARTLETT, TN –16 year-old Torrence Yarbrough is now charged with reckless homicide in the shooting death of his 12 year-old cousin.

Twelve year-old Brandon House was shot Saturday, May 2, 2009, at a family member’s home in Bartlett. Police say House was looking at a gun, when Yarbrough went to grab it back. Cops say that’s when the gun went off.

Shelby County Juvenile Court officials confirm that Yarbrough has been arrested before.n December 2008, he was arrested for having a gun on a school campus. He has also been charged in the past for having marijuana and for trespassing. More on My Eyewitness news

Man shot to death over game of beer pong

Bridgeport, PA – One Montgomery County, Pa. man is dead and another is behind bars after an argument sparked by a drinking game and subsequent trash talking got out of hand Friday night in Bridgeport.

Authorities Monday announced the arrest of Joseph B. Jimenez, 24, of Bridgeport, Pa. for the weekend shooting death of an acquaintance, 25-year-old Scott Riley, also of Bridgeport, over a game of beer pong.

The two men were playing a game of beer pong with others when an argument between the two broke out, according to authorities. Beer pong is a drinking game in which players attempt to throw ping pong balls into cups of beer, requiring opponents to drink the beer when the balls hit their target.

That dispute continued when the two met in an alley behind the home where they had gathered that night.

Riley mocked Jimenez by telling him “shoot me” and taunted him by saying he didn’t have the guts to do it, according to the criminal complaint.

Jimenez drew out a .40-caliber handgun he had concealed in his waistband and fired one shot that struck Riley in the neck, the complaint said. More on Phillyburbs.com

Suspect Charged in Brother’s Death

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Police have arrested a shooting victim’s brother for his death and for injuries to a second person.

20-year old Ronzy Echols has been charged with Reckless Homicide for the shooting death of his brother, 26-year old Terry Echols.

The incident occurred April 29, 2009 on the 1200-block of Turkey Run in South Memphis.

According to Memphis Police, Terry and another teen where involved in some sort of physical altercation. Ronzy fired his weapon, presumably to break up the fight.

Emergency crews were called to the scene and transported Terry Echols to The Med where he later died. More on myfoxMemphis.com

Man, 20, shot to death by Friend

SAN DIEGO, CA – A 20-year-old man was found shot to death Wednesday afternoon in an apartment in San Carlos, police said.

San Diego police Sgt. Bryan Pendleton said that shortly after 3 p.m., police received a call about a shooting at the Canyon View apartment complex on Navajo Road near Jackson Drive.

Officers found the victim inside a bedroom of a third-floor apartment in a three-story building in the gated complex. Paramedics who responded pronounced him dead.

Initial reports were that a 25-year-old man called police to report that he had accidentally shot his friend, Pendleton said.

No one else was believed to have been inside the apartment when the shooting occurred, Pendleton said.

The friend was taken to police headquarters in downtown San Diego for questioning.

Homicide detectives were at the apartment investigating Wednesday night.

Fort Lewis soldier fatally shot

Seattle, Washington – A Fort Lewis soldier died today of an apparent gun shot wound to the head, a death now under investigation by Army officials.

The soldier was found at 12:20 p.m. in his car and was taken to Madigan Army Medical Center, where he died at about 2:30 p.m., according to Fort Lewis officials.  More on Seattle Times
